I took the boys to see their pediatrician, Dr. Valdez, this morning for their yearly well visit. They boys both really like the doctor, so they were on their best behavior in his new office (third office in three years - phwew! This is finally his new permanent location after splitting last year from his old partnership). When Sawyer had gone in last year for his 2-year check up he was current with all of his shots, and Dr. Valdez had said he wouldn't need any more until right before he started kindergarten. Apparently we weren't quite as up-to-date with Sutton's shots as we had been with Sawyer's (likely because he had been sick the past few times we've visited the doctor, and they don't like to give the kids shots when they're sick), so I was shocked to hear that he still needs FIVE shots to get current!
We opted to give him three of the shots today and to wait another few months before we get the last two. He sat on my lap, Sawyer sat next to us, and the nurse had us sing the ABC's while she administed the shots. It was incredible - for the first two shots Sutton didn't even skip an A-B-C beat while she was poking him, but on the third shot he finally realized that something else was going on besides a fun group sing-a-long, and he started to cry just a little bit until she put on his BandAids. When you're two years old, BandAids must be magic, because there's nothing like a smiling Snoopy strip on your leg to instantly dry up the tears (well, except maybe a lollipop).
The boys are still as tall as ever! Dr. Valdez was a little surprised that they are still so high up in the percentile rankings. He said that once kids hit their 2nd b-day the growth rate starts to slow down and even out, so you see a lot of kids that were higher up in the percentiles start to average out a bit more. Not my guys though - Sawyer is measuring as tall as an "average" five and a half year old! Nothing to worry about though - we're just likely going to end up with some pretty tall kids (we better start practicing some basketball skills!). Seriously though, I do worry about how in the world I'm going to be able to keep them well fed when they're teenagers!
