Slacking

So it's been a week since I last updated, and I realize I've been slacking a bit. It's been a busy week, as usual, what else can I say? On Tuesday I went to check out a preschool for Sawyer to start next summer (yes, seriously, for those of you who don't have little ones these days. Wait lists for most places are at least a year out!). It was a Montessori preschool, which stresses independence but also concentration, which I really think that Sawyer would benefit from. I still want to check out a "traditional" type preschool to compare, but the more Mitch and I have been thinking and talking about it, the more sure I've become that I at least want to get him on the waiting list for the Montessori school.

The smoke from all the wildfires is just finally starting to lift, and this morning was the first day that I've taken the kids out in our backyard to play where it seemed like we could actually breathe easier. We spent the morning playing mostly on the patio since we just had a huge (and scattered) bunch of the sod replaced last night, so now we're unable to walk on it again for at least another week. Poor kids are confused...one night we're encouraging them to run around on it, and the next day we're telling them they can't walk on it again. Luckily they're not even that into the grass, and they mostly just want to cut a path across it to go play in the bark area with their slides. Sawyer seems to equate any type of windy breeze with being cold, so despite the fact that it was already like 80 degrees outside, he kept complaining that he was cold, so we came back inside and made paper plate shakers and masks to pass the morning. At this point I think I actually have enough art supplies for the kids to last for the next 5 years...at least they love projects as much as I do!

Tomorrow we are going to head to McBean Park in the morning to celebrate the 4th of July. They are having bounce houses, a petting zoo, a fire engine and all kinds of fun stuff for the kids to do. Hopefully I can wear them out a bit and give them a good midday nap because then we'll be headed over to Jim's for an evening swim and BBQ before we light off a bunch of fireworks. Supposedly this year Krista and Cristina are setting up a cardboard Chinatown to burn down (for those of you unfamiliar, every year we set up some sort of scene/backdrop for our fireworks that usually ends up on fire at the end of the night - last year it was a pirate ship).

In one last bit of completely unrelated (and totally TMI!) news, Sawyer has taken to using the real toilet in the past couple of days. He doesn't seem to care if he pees his diaper, but when he has to poop he's all about taking me in there to use the "big boy potty." Thank goodness for small victories!

Despite the fact that he's holding a spoon in his hand, he really thought it was way cooler to eat oatmeal with his hands
